나는 누구인가?(41)

 

나는

4원소

 

나는

본래 하나였으나,

스스로를 나누어

물·땅·불·바람 네 큰 바탕(四大)으로 피어났다.

 

물(水)은 성뇌의 바다,

체액의 노래, 태고의 꿈을 머금은 뇌수의 강

땅(地)은 복뇌의 대지,

근육과 뼈로 생명을 지탱하는 존재의 축

불(火)은 심뇌의 불씨,

기(氣)의 숨결로 사랑과 의지를 밝히는 심장의 등불

바람(風)은 두뇌의 하늘,

사유와 영감이 부유하는 정신의 바람결

 

이 네 바탕의 비율에 따라

나의 성향이 드러나고,

이 네 흐름이 고르게 어우러질 때

나는 비로소 진짜 ‘나’로 깨어난다.

 

물·땅·불·바람이 완전한 조화를 이루면

그 자리에 드러나는 것은 공(空) —

텅 비어 모든 것을 품은 다섯 번째 원소

 

벗이여,

그 공을 저 먼 극락이나

죽음 너머의 허공에서 찾지 말라.

지금 여기,

네 안의 4원소가 춤추듯 어울릴 때

공은 이미 숨쉬고 있으니,

4원소가 곧 공이며

공이 곧 나의 본래 얼굴이다.

 

나는 본래 하나였으나,

물과 땅과 불과 바람으로 흩어져

천변만화의 세상을 체험하네.

그리고 마침내,

모든 원소가 고요히 춤출 때

나는 깨닫네 —

모든 것은 하나요,

그 하나는 공임을

 

 

Who Am I? (41)

 

I am

the Four Elements.

 

I was one, at first,

then chose to flower forth

as water, earth, fire, and wind—

the four great grounds of being.

 

Water is the ocean of the sex-brain,

the song of fluids, the marrow-river

bearing the primeval dream.

Earth is the belly-brain’s continent,

muscle and bone upholding the axis of life.

Fire is the heart-brain’s ember,

the breath of qi—love and will

lit like a lantern in the chest.

Wind is the sky of the head-brain,

where thought and inspiration drift

on lucid currents.

 

By the ratio of these four

my temper shows itself;

and when their streams run even,

I wake as my truest self.

 

When water, earth, fire, and wind

arrive at perfect consonance,

what appears is Emptiness—空—

a fifth element, hollow yet holding all.

 

Friend,

do not seek that Void in distant paradises

or beyond the gate of death.

Here and now,

when the four within you dance as one,

the Void is already breathing.

The four are Void,

and Void is my original face.

 

Once I was one;

I scattered into water, earth, fire, and wind

to taste the ten-thousand changes.

At last, when every element

dances quietly in stillness, I see:

all is one,

and that one is Void.
